Who is this for?
 |
Anyone who manages or
leads teams of experts or knowledge workers
(that includes analysts, IT workers, technology managers, doctors,
lawyers and many other professions) where its vital to get
the best out of smart people
|
 |
New or existing managers
who want to get more from their team
|
 |
Any manager who works in a
knowledge-intensive environment
|
| What is
this unique course about?
The
transition from being an expert at what you do to
managing people is perhaps the most significant personal
development transition that anyone can make. How this
transition is managed is critical to getting the best
out of people.
This
involves a whole change in outlook and can have a
dramatic impact on self-esteem, sense of identity and
overall personal performance - not to mention the impact
on the team being managed and the organisation itself. |

Get the
most out of smart people |
This course uniquely
focuses on the management and leadership of knowledge
workers, smart people who are expert at what they do
and yet often difficult to manage well.
Without targeted
and appropriate training:
 |
Experienced and
knowledgeable professionals can struggle to take on
their new managerial role and responsibilities
|
 |
Individual and team
performance can suffer |
 |
Projects become delayed
and absorb more costs and time than planned
|
 |
The effectiveness of whole
departments can be impacted |
 |
Productive working
relationships are never formed or break down
|
 |
Individual careers can be
put on hold |
 |
What seemed to be a
perfectly reasonable and logical appointment can end up
costing individuals, teams, functions and the entire
organisation much more than intended...
|
We are all likely
to have had the personal experience of a new managerial
appointment resulting in lower team performance and frustration.
So what causes this very common problem with proven and highly
competent and intelligent people?
The
vast majority of managerial skills training doesn't provide the
personal development that's needed. In fact inappropriate
training can actually cause more frustration. Individuals learn
new skills but still lack the beliefs, values and managerial
identity to confidently and competently adapt behaviour to
produce the performance required.
Some of the underlying causes
of the problem are:
 |
Skills and knowledge
development isn't enough. Without the confidence and
belief to go with the skills, frustration is increased
and individuals can be even less likely to use the
skills they have learned |
 |
The wrong skills are
being taught. Managing knowledge workers and experts
requires tools and concepts that are unique and subtle
and many trainers and training organisations simply
don't have the experience or ability to provide this. |
 |
Individual differences
are not catered for. Much training is in the format
of 'one size fits all'. The reality is that all
individuals have strengths that can be used to maximise
their managerial performance. Plus of course different
individuals require different management styles. Without
taking this into account the effectiveness of training
is severely limited. |
 |
The issues of
transition are not effectively handled. The 'Expert
to Manager' transition is perhaps the biggest individual
transition that an individual will make in their career.
The switch from task and knowledge focus to people and
relationships requires a significant change in 'mind
set'. If training doesn't take this into account then
again it has limited usefulness. |
 |
Support mechanisms
aren't in place to support on-going learning. How
often does this happen - an individual goes on an
intensive training, learns a great deal and then simply
nothing changes back in the work place? If on-going
support isn't in place then the value of training is
negligible or even negative.
|
|
This is
an opportunity missed!
First managerial
roles can form the basis of how a manager will perform for the
rest of their career. Attitudes are learned, meaning is applied
to experiences and beliefs are taken on and reinforced that can
help or hinder the performance of individuals, teams and
organisations for the long-term.
This is the right time
to get the best training and on-going support possible... |

A
modular approach to enhance, support and reinforce learning
At ABL World we
believe a modular approach works best because:
 |
It's less disruptive to
your work as you only have to take a few days out at a
time |
 |
Learning is better
consolidated and integrated because you get to try out
things between modules then come back and share and
reflect on experiences |
 |
You have time to absorb
information and test its usefulness for yourself
|
 |
You can build stronger and
longer-lasting relationships with the people taking the
same course. That means better on-going support from
people in the same position as you.
|
What are the themes for each
